Blocked account and financial proof for the French student visa

Alongside accommodation, financial means are the other pillar consulates scrutinise in a student visa file. The principle: prove you can live in France without depending on full-time work. The reference amount is set by the French authorities (several hundred euros per month; check the current figure for your country on France-Visas). The real question is what form of proof to provide.

Accepted forms of financial proof

• Bank statements: a sufficient balance in an account in your name, stable over several months. Consulates distrust large transfers landing just before the application.
• Sponsorship (usually a parent): a signed support letter, the sponsor's ID, and their income evidence or bank statements.
• Scholarship: an official award letter stating amount and duration (government, Campus France, institution).
• AVI / blocked account: see below, the most reassuring mechanism for several consulates.

How the AVI blocked account works

The Attestation de Virement Irrévocable (AVI), often called a blocked account, is a banking product designed for students from countries where classic bank statements are hard to validate (very common across North and West Africa):

1. You (or your family) deposit roughly a year of living funds with a partner bank.
2. The bank issues an irrevocability certificate: the funds are earmarked for your stay in France and released to you monthly once you are there.
3. That certificate joins your visa file as financial proof.

Strengths: proof that is hard to dispute, neutralising suspicions of balances inflated for the occasion. Constraints: bank fees (opening and management), immobilised funds, and issuance delays to anticipate. Always check that the bank is recognised and that the certificate states the irrevocable nature, the monthly amount and the duration.

Beware of non-bank intermediaries selling cut-price "AVI" documents: exactly like fake housing attestations, an unverifiable document destroys the credibility of the whole file.

What the consulate actually checks

• Traceability: funds whose origin makes sense (savings, sponsor income, scholarship).
• Duration: coverage for the academic year, not just the first month.

Frequent mistakes

1. The last-minute transfer into an empty account: spotted immediately.
2. A sponsor without evidence: a support letter alone is not enough; the sponsor's income proof is required.
3. Untranslated documents where the consulate requires translation.
